What is Annual Fee?
An annual fee is a yearly charge for keeping a credit card open. It's billed to your statement once a year. Cards with annual fees typically offer rewards, cash back, travel perks, or help build credit.
Under the Credit CARD Act, first-year fees can't exceed 25% of your initial credit limit—this protects you from excessive upfront costs.
Before signing up for a card with an annual fee, check whether the benefits are worth it. If you no longer want to pay the fee, you can often ask the issuer to waive it or downgrade you to a no-fee card through a product change.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
A traveler opens a credit card with a $450 annual fee that offers a $300 travel credit and airport lounge access. If they use the $300 credit and access the lounges multiple times, the value of the perks exceeds the annual fee.
