What is Network Provider?

A network provider is a doctor or facility that has agreed to discounted rates with your insurance company. Staying in-network saves you money. In-network providers offer significant cost savings to patients. Seeing an out-of-network provider generally results in much higher out-of-pocket costs, and patients may be subject to balance billing if the plan does not cover out-of-network care.

Under the No Surprises Act, consumers are protected against unexpected out-of-network bills for emergency services and certain non-emergency services provided at in-network facilities, limiting patient cost-sharing to in-network rates.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

An insured patient visits an in-network physical therapist. The therapist's standard rate is $150, but the contracted network rate is $90. The patient pays their $30 copay, and the insurance pays the remaining $60, saving the patient from balance billing.
